Tilly-Wood Street Design Showcase event

Design Showcase: Wednesday 19 June 2019

Thank you to everyone who came along to the showcase event at St George’s Church in Tillydrone this Wednesday. It was great to see so many people and your involvement in the project as a whole has helped develop some really exciting designs for your neighbourhood. In total we had over 70 people come together from the community to see the updated designs and get involved in the activities. If you missed the event you can view the refined designs online here: link to updated concept design .Below are some photos from the event of what we got up to.

Design Showcase

The updated concept design was displayed along with results from the public consultation and the changes that have been made. Members of the public had the opportunity to talk to some of the team about the designs in more detail.

Walk-through of the project area

We took people around the project area to talk through some of the proposed changes and answer any questions.

Activities and fun

We’d like to thank the Tuk-in team from Cfine who put on a fantastic spread of homemade soups, sandwiches and cake. And weren't we so lucky with the weather too!

We also had along a 'Dr Bike' from Adventure Aberdeen, a bike mechanic who had a queue of bikes ready to fix. His handy work was not gone unnoticed and he received several thank you cards from the children who's bikes are now ready for the Summer!

We’d like to thank all of the representatives from local groups who came to talk about events and activities to get you outdoors which included Cycling UK, Healthwalks, Grampian Cycling partnership and Aberdeen Multicultural centre.

What’s next?

You can view the updated designs online alongside explanations of the changes in the design. The designs are now being handed over to Aberdeen City Council for further development towards construction.

Thank you again for everyone who has been involved in the project over the last year. We've really enjoyed working with you!

Tilly-Wood Street Design Showcase Event: 19 June

What we've been up to

During March and April this year we collected your comments on the initial concept design for the area. The concept design for the Tilly-Wood Street Design Project could strengthen the connection between Tillydrone and Woodside by:

· Reducing traffic volume and speed along Hayton Road and Don Street;

· Improving and widening pavements;

· Providing better crossings; and

· Enhancing public space through greenery and play.

Throughout this consultation period we engaged with over 1,200 people through events, meetings and our project website. 602 people visited the website and we received 425 completed feedback forms. This feedback following the last nine months of engagement has helped refine the concept design which will be showcased at our upcoming public event on the 19th June.

Design Showcase: Wednesday 19 June 2019

On Wednesday 19 June, at St George’s Church in Tillydrone, the public are invited to have the opportunity to:

  • Drop-in anytime between 3pm and 8pm to view the concept design for Hayton Road Centre, Don Street Bridge, Woodside Gateway, Tillydrone Gateway and Hayton Road Underpass. There will be a short presentation at 7.15pm;
  • Walkthrough the concept design at 3.30pm;
  • Find out about walking, cycling and outdoor activities in the area from Aberdeen Multicultural Centre, Grampian Cycling Partnership, Health Walks and many more; and
  • Get a free health check on your bike from Adventure Aberdeen who will get your bike ready for summer!
  • Refreshments will be available from 5pm by Tuk-In and all are welcome.

    The concept design will also be available from the 19th June through the project website: https://tillywoodproposals.commonplace.is/

    The Design Consultation is closed. Here’s how it went

    Tilly-Wood Street Design Consultation

    The public consultation for Tilly-Wood Street Design where we shared the design ideas for the local area has now come to an end. Thank you for all your comments and feedback which will be analysed over the next few weeks to help refine the design ideas.

    Our website is now closed for comments, but you can still see everyone's contributions and the design proposals here: https://tillywoodproposals.commonplace.is/overview

    What did we get up to?

    Between March and April we engaged with a total number of 1,200 people through various events and activities. Have a look below:

    Public Drop-in Sessions in both communities

    We held 2 public sessions on 27 March across Woodside and Tillydrone to showcase the design ideas and gather feedback. 107 people attended across the two events including 20 children from local schools.

    Website Launch

    We uploaded the designs onto our website on the 26 March for people to leave their comments and feedback. Since its launch we had:

    533 visitors to the site 659 comments about the design ideas

    Design Walks through the area

    We organised design walks through the area led by our Urban Designer of the project to give people the opportunity to ask questions in-situ for each design.

    Attending community group meetings

    Over the consultation period we attended Aberdeen’s Disability Equity Partnership; Woodside Community Council; and Printfield Community Group meetings and held a coffee morning with Clifton Court Housing to discuss the designs in detail.

    Activities and events with the Youth

    We spoke to children in the area aged 5 to 12 years about the design ideas and collected their feedback. We held a stall at the Fersands & Fountain Youth Club Connection Day where we spoke to 18 children and 12 adults. We also visited Riverbank Primary School and presented at the whole school assembly of 360 children and delivered activities for two classes in P6 and P7.

    #TidyTillyWood campaign

    As well as the public consultation we also held a community wide clean up, in support of the #TidyTilly community initiative, which included a very successful litter pick event involving 12 local residents and 47pupils from Riverbank Primary School and Woodside Primary School. 14 bags of rubbish from streets and green spaces was collected, therefore improving local residents experience when using their local streets. You can watch a video for the campaign here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cc28EBWRPhY

    What’s Next?

    The team are analysing all the feedback received and will be refining the designs where possible. Our next public event for the project will be held in mid-June where we will be displaying the feedback received on the initial designs, the refined concept design and outlining next steps with Aberdeen City Council. In the meantime we’re organising a wildlife walk in the area:

    Wednesday 15 May – Wee Wildlife Water Walk

    Living Streets’ National Walking National Walking Month is celebrating walking this month and the benefits this simple act brings. We would like to invite you to our Wee Wildlife Wander Walk down the River Don between Tillydrone and Seaton Park , run together with the Countryside Rangers. Our day at Fersands Project and upcoming events

    What we’ve been up to

    On 2nd April 2019, our team joined the Connection Day organised by Fersands and Fountain Community Project to speak to children and young people about the proposed designs for Tillydrone and Woodside. During the day we held a stall with visualisations to show the current design of the streets and proposed changes and asked participants to discuss and shape the design proposals.

    We talked about the proposed changes and how it might impact themselves and others moving around. They were interested in the improvements to the public space and in particular the idea of adding colour as well as more greenery and informal play opportunities. Below is one of the design visuals for the Underpass from Hayton Road.

    Some of the children had taken part in our Big Street Survey last October and were happy to see that the observations and comments from the session contributed to the designs. They pointed out the importance of safer crossings and wondered about the interaction between pedestrians and cyclists, as well as suggested to put more bike parking in the neighbourhood. We also spoke to some parents and collected their feedback too.

    We would like to thank Fersands and Fountain Community Project for the opportunity to join this community event. It's important to include children and young people in the development of the space they use and travel to ensure they feel safe, and can use the place to play, learn and grow. Engaging children and young people enable us to understand the unique perspective they have regarding their environments, highlight their priorities and to consider the solutions they propose.

    We were very impressed with their feedback and it is great to see young generation interested in the project and sharing ideas. We will continue the engagement of children and young people, joining Riverbank Primary School on 29th April.

    Leave your feedback until Friday 26 April 2019

    This event is part of the Design Consultation which is currently open to public feedback. The comments and feedback from this stage will help us develop these designs in more detail over the next few months. You can provide feedback to us by Friday 26 April via:

    Designs go live for Tilly-Wood – Have your Say

    This week the initial designs for the Tilly-Wood Street Design project went live and we held events across Tillydrone and Woodside to involve the local community. Thank you to everyone who came along - it was great to see so many people and to gather your comments on the design ideas. Don’t worry if you couldn’t make it as there is still plenty of time to get involved. Read below to find out how.

    Initial Designs for Tilly-Wood

    Since the start of the project in September 2018 we have engaged with over 1,500 people and run 26 activities and events across the area. Through meetings, surveys and talking to people we gathered all of your comments which brought up the following common themes;

    Improving pavement conditions

    Reducing and slowing down traffic

    Enhancing the public space

    Adding more greenery and informal play opportunities

    Reducing traffic volume and speed is vital to the delivery of the overall design. By reducing and slowing down traffic, we will be able to enhance the street environment for people of all abilities to access the area by foot, bike and wheels.

    All of these themes have been incorporated into the initial designs which focus on Hayton Road Centre, Don Side Bridge, Hayton Road Underpass and the two gateway entrances to the area; Woodside from Great Northern Road and Tillydrone Avenue onto Hayton Road. You can see the full design ideas on our website or download the display boards from the event .

    Drop-in events attract 120 people

    On Wednesday 27 March, we held drop-in events at St George’s Church in Tillydrone and the Woodside Fountain Centre to showcase the initial designs. Over the course of the day, we spoke to over 120 local residents, business owners, school children and received a huge number of feedback forms.

    The sun was shining which was conveniently timed for our led walk of the designs through the area and for enjoying the tasty soup and sandwiches from Cfine’s Tuk-in van!

    Feedback until 26 April

    The consultation during March and April is part of the Design stage of the project. The comments and feedback from this stage will help us develop these designs in more detail over the next few months. You can provide feedback to us by Friday 26 April via:

  • View the designs online and leave your comments by visiting: https://tillywoodproposals.commonplace.is/

    Speed Watch Update 2019

    Hayton Road Improvements Project

    Following the Living Streets Traffic Safety Audit in 2017, Aberdeen City Council’s Hayton Road Improvement Project aims to reduce incidents of vehicles speeding Hayton Road.

    Speed Watch

    So far, five Speed Watch sessions have been held with Riverbank Primary School and Police Scotland between February and June 2018 involving:

    · Traffic speed surveys by pupils and officers;

    · Asking drivers about their awareness of the speed limit and proximity to the school along with other questions;

    · Holding a workshop with pupils and parents; and

    · Producing a speed awareness campaign video with pupils and SHMU radio.

    Speed Watch Event

    On Tuesday 26th February CPT Officers together with pupils from Riverbank Primary School carried out speed checks on Hayton Road, identifying and stopping those exceeding the speed limit and asking them to answer some questions from the school pupils. Young people are one of the most vulnerable road user groups and involving them in the Speed Watch initiative, highlights the importance of road safety outside schools and provides them with a level of ownership for tackling the issue.

    Hamish Cattanach, Community Development Officer, said:

    Feedback about the Speed Watch sessions have been really positive from parents and pupils and now a 2nd year is underway with hopes of this being upscaled throughout the city. It’s about the local people and officials working together to come up with ‘community solutions’ and hopefully the Speed Watch sessions will act as a catalyst in progressing traffic calming measures throughout the area ”.

    Tilly-Wood Street Design Project – Engagement

    The issue of vehicle speeds along Hayton Road has been also raised by the community during the current Tilly-Wood Street Design project. At the engagement events and activities held so far, local people have highlighted the difficulties pedestrians face when crossing Hayton Road and, in particular, during peak times at the zebra crossing at the junction with Dill Road.

    During the Big Street Survey events in October, school pupils expressed concerns about vehicle speed and difficulties with crossing Hayton Road.

    Some of the comments included:

    ‘Cars not always stop on zebra crossing’

    ‘Some cars don’t stop when I’m trying to cross and the lollipop is not there’

    ‘People could get hit by a car walking to shop by a car trying to pass there’

    ‘Zebra crossing still not safe, it takes a lot of time to stop cars’

    Creating a vision

    In collaboration with the community, following the engagement undertaken so far, the Tilly-Wood Street Design project has created a vision to ensure design proposals meet the needs and aspirations of the people who live, work and travel through the area, including:

  • Movement: to make it easier for walking, cycling and wheeling
  • Place Quality: to improve public space with more greenery, artwork and places to sit and play and
  • Community: to create a stronger community and business identity
  • The team are currently developing design proposals that will soon be available for public consultation in March and April. The proposed design will use the vision set by the community to tackle barriers such as traffic speed and volume.

    Sign up to the news to get project up-dates about events and talks in the local area during March/April for you to find out more about the proposed designs and how to feedback.

    Session 2: Tilly-Wood Design Workshop

    Thank you to everyone who attended the Design Workshops at St George’s Church last Tuesday for the second stage of the Tilly-Wood community-led Street Design project.

    The event was open to the public and we had local residents, school children, businesses and councillors from the local area who got involved in design workshops and shared their ideas and aspirations of how to plan their neighbourhood.

    A special thanks to the guys from Adventure Aberdeen who delivered the Dr Bike Session and offered free bike advice and mini repairs for everyone’s bikes.

    Designing with Riverbank Primary School

    During the afternoon we welcomed pupils from Riverbank Primary school to find out how they travel through the area and the type of places they like to spend time in. We looked at some of the previous projects Street Design has completed and discussed the differences in change and how a place can make you feel.

    The class then had the opportunity to become Urban Designers of their own area and used 3D to-scale models and materials to design Tillydrone and Woodside. We had ideas which included parks for dogs, more places to play, plants, rental bike schemes and even benches with inbuilt Wifi. Take a look at some of their plans below.

    Model Kit Workshop

    Later on we held a drop-in session for everyone from 3:30pm until 8pm to display the feedback and comments collected so far during the project. During this time we also held a design workshop for people to take the opportunity to discuss ideas with each other using miniature models and maps of the area.

    If you didn’t get a chance to read our display boards you can read them here - link to display boards .

    Next steps for the project

    This session forms a major part of our information collection. With the comments and ideas from this event and with the background data, material and facts gathered in the discover stage we will be looking to commence forming the outline design for the area.

    Upcoming events

    Over the winter and early spring we will continue to work with the design working group, the steering group, Aberdeen City Council to create proposals. These proposals will be open to your comments in March where we will hold another drop-in event and over a period of time the designs will be displayed in multiple venues and through the Commonplace website.

    In the meantime watch this space for more local events in your area including led bike rides, local walks, film screenings and more. Keep checking this site for details of upcoming events or contact emily.gait@sustrans.org.uk for more information.

    Exploring Tillydrone and Woodside

    Last week we had the pleasure of talking to local residents and community groups across Tillydrone and Woodside to find out more about the local area and what changes people would like to see. We met with community groups including Printfield Project in Woodside; Donside Village; and the Over 55’s lunch club in Tillydrone. We also organised activities with Food and Fun at Riverbank Primary School and Fersands Project Group in Woodside.

    Below are a few highlights from the week:

    Surveys on the Street

    We went out with Fersands Project Group to understand their daily movements in the area by collecting information, drawing on observations and counting the numbers of cars, pedestrians and cyclists.

    Here is what they filled out:

    The Food and Fun group recorded their 'Journey to School' to show what they see in their journey to and from school.

    Donside Village and Hydro Scheme

    We also visited Donside Village and were lucky enough to receive a tour around the newly built, community owned, hydro scheme! Take a look below, and spot it on our postcard!

    Check out their 'Splatter Zone' which was created by the community to brighten up the area using recycled objects.

    Thanks to everyone who welcomed us, took part in our activities and shared their comments on the area. We look forward to arranging more visits and making sure the project involves the whole community.

    What’s next?

    We’ll be holding our next public session to develop your comments into design ideas on Tuesday 27 November . Watch this space for further details but save the date in your diary for now! Health walks and Big Street Surveys in Tillydrone and Woodside

    Learning from a local

    This week the Street Design team joined the Aberdeen Health Walks for their weekly walk around Tillydrone and Woodside. We met outside Woodside Community Centre and after a stroll in the fresh air around the area we finished up with a hot drink and continued conversations about the project and how people travel through the space. It was great to hear enthusiasm about improving the neighbourhood whilst learning about the local history of the area.

    Big Street Survey

    Later on we were back out on the street with young people from the Aberdeen Lad’s Club after-school group. We played activities and games relating to the journey to school and talked about how the design of streets can impact how we use an area. As part of this we carried out the ‘Big Street Survey’ by walking around the area and understanding the current space in terms of how it looks and how it’s used by recording it on a survey. The kids really enjoyed this activity and you can see some of the results below!

    If you are part of a community group and want to get involved in the project or have a local event coming up you’d like to share please let us know by emailing Emily, emily.gait@sustrans.org.uk .

    Over 150 people stop by for project launch

    Thank you to everyone who came along to the launch of the Tilly-Wood Street Design Project on Wednesday 19 September. It was a busy day with the project team located across Tillydrone and Woodside meeting with the local community and hearing their ideas for the area. You may have seen us outside McColls on Hayton Road and Tesco on Great Western Road or inside Tillydrone Library and Woodside Community Centre. Thank you for battling through the wind and coming to say hello!

    Later on, we held an evening event at Aberdeen Lad’s Club and, despite the high winds, we had a great turn out from the local community who met the project team, had the opportunity to read more about the project and take part in interactive activities. If you didn’t get a chance to read the information on display, you can view and download out round the room display here .

    Upcoming events

    Join us on Tuesday 2 October for a led walk around Tillydrone and Woodside run by Aberdeen Health Walks. Meet at 11am outside Woodside Community Centre for a 1-hour walk of the area. Finish with a free cup of tea/coffee and a chat at Woodside Community Centre Café.

    Our next event will be a practical model kit workshop in November where you will have the opportunity to redesign the area by using props and miniature models. Communities asked to design improvements to Woodside and Tillydrone neighbourhoods

    Residents and stakeholders in and around Tillydrone and Woodside in Aberdeen are invited to take part in a community-led design project. The project builds on the street audit undertaken by Living Streets in 2017 with residents which identified potential solutions to address road safety along Hayton Road. The project team now want to develop a concept design that aims to strengthen the connection between Tillydrone and Woodside for those on foot and by bike.

    Between July 2018 and June 2019, Sustrans will work in partnership with Aberdeen City Council and the local community to:

  • Redesign public spaces so they feel safer, more attractive and sociable places to spend time in;
  • Make it easier for people of all ages and abilities to travel on foot and by bike to local facilities in the area;
  • Improve community connections between Tillydrone and Woodside; and
  • Motivate and empower residents to influence decisions affecting them and their environment.
  • Emily Davie, Street Design Project Coordinator, Sustrans, said: “We are delighted to be working with Aberdeen City Council and the communities of Tillydrone and Woodside to improve the connection for people to move actively around the neighbourhood. We are inviting all residents and stakeholders of the local area to come along to share their knowledge and ideas for change. We will be running engagement sessions and workshops in the local area from September 2018 to May 2019 to ensure we put forward proposals that work for the whole community. Whether you live, work or travel through the area, we would love to hear from you.”

    Aberdeen City Council Transport and Regeneration Spokesman Councillor Ross Grant said: “I’m delighted that progress is being made to identify how to improve the connectivity between Tillydrone and Woodside, looking principally at making it easier to navigate the ‘Muggers Brig’ on approach from both Hayton Road and Western Road. Improving walkability and cyclability and improving road safety are incredibly important to us and this is a fantastic project for as many people as possible to play their part in helping to influence how these key streets in Tillydrone and Woodside are shaped in the future.”

    Residents and stakeholders are invited to come along to a public launch on Wednesday 19 September:

  • Drop by between 12.30pm and 3.30pm outside McColls on Hayton Road in Tillydrone and Tesco on Great Northern Road in Woodside
  • Drop in between 5.30pm and 8pm at Riverbank Primary School in Tillydrone for further information and refreshments. A brief presentation will be made by the project partners at 7pm.
  • Everyone is welcome to come along, share their knowledge of the area and find out more about the project. Those who can’t attend the events can also add their ideas and suggestions for improvements to the local area on the project website: Commonplace or by completing a survey at Tillydrone Library and Learning Centre and Woodside Library by Friday 5 October 2018.
