Health walks and Big Street Surveys in Tillydrone and Woodside

Learning from a local

This week the Street Design team joined the Aberdeen Health Walks for their weekly walk around Tillydrone and Woodside. We met outside Woodside Community Centre and after a stroll in the fresh air around the area we finished up with a hot drink and continued conversations about the project and how people travel through the space. It was great to hear enthusiasm about improving the neighbourhood whilst learning about the local history of the area.

Big Street Survey

Later on we were back out on the street with young people from the Aberdeen Lad’s Club after-school group. We played activities and games relating to the journey to school and talked about how the design of streets can impact how we use an area. As part of this we carried out the ‘Big Street Survey’ by walking around the area and understanding the current space in terms of how it looks and how it’s used by recording it on a survey. The kids really enjoyed this activity and you can see some of the results below!

If you are part of a community group and want to get involved in the project or have a local event coming up you’d like to share please let us know by emailing Emily, emily.gait@sustrans.org.uk .

Thanks for all your comments so far. It’s not too late to give your feedback on the area and how it can be changed. We have extended the deadline of making a comment online to Wednesday 10 October. Please share the below link with any other people who live or travel through the area: https://tillywood.commonplace.is

What’s next?

We’ll be holding our next public session in November which will be a practical design workshop. Keep an eye out on here for further details.

*The walking group in Woodside is organised by Aberdeen Health and they meet every Tuesday at 11am outside Woodside Community Centre for a 1 hour walk around the area and finish up with a drink at the centre. Everyone is welcome!
